Phoenix-based pool builder Shasta Pools & Spas received top marks in an industry publication this month. The company was ranked No. 2 in Pool and Spa News’ Top 50 Builders list for 2017.

Skip Ast III, general sales manager of Shasta Pools, says he thinks the company’s emphasis on family is a huge part of it success.

“Being a family business it’s a little easier for us to focus on the families we’re serving because we can put ourselves in their shoes or their flip flops,” Ast said. “I think we can empathize in a way that makes it very, very personal for us and for the people that we’re serving.”

The family-owned and operated company brought in $33 million in total residential construction revenue for the new pools division for the 2016 fiscal year, performing nearly 700 pool excavations.

The rankings were assigned based on revenue and web presence, industry and community involvement, size, revenue and staff straining. Shasta Pools & Spas has ranked in the top 4 builders for the past five years. The second place spot is the company’s highest mark.

“The community involvement is probably the part of the ranking that’s the most exciting for us because that’s where our heart’s at,” said Ast.

Ast said the company works with the Make A Wish Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project, serves Valley veterans and will be launching a partnership with Hope Women’s Center, a nonprofit providing education mentoring and material resource programs for women.

The company has about 250 employees and has locations in Phoenix, Mesa and Surprise. Shasta Pools & Spas builds and remodels residential, commercial and Olympic pools, manufactures pool products and sold its service division.

The company sold its six pool supply stores to Leslie’s Poolmart Inc., a specialty swimming pool supplies retailer, in 2012.

Gilbert-based Presidential Pools, Spas and Patio and Chandler-based California Pools & Landscape also landed among the top 10 builders, ranking third and sixth respectively.
